Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do you create your paintings?
A: Well, first I develop a sketch utilizing as much reference as possible. Once my sketch is approved, I transfer a light pencil outline of the image onto my illustration board. I work in a mixed media technique. This means I may use different types of paint or colored pencils to produce the finished art. Normally, I use an airbrush with transparent acrylics to slowly build up layers of color. I will then work up the details using fine brushes and sometimes colored pencils. I may also use oils to create the effect I am looking for.
Q: Do you use a computer in your work?
A: Most of my finished art is hand painted. However, I have learned to use the computer as an art tool. It has saved me a lot of time creating my layouts. It allows me to move around and manipulate several images at one time. When I am happy with the design, I print it out. It can eliminate the need for a color rough, which is a great time saver when I am working on a tight deadline. I am then able to create the finished painting, having a better idea of the overall look, what colors I will use, and any adjustments I need to make.
Q: How large are your paintings?
A: My work can range anywhere between 16" x 20"- 30" x 40". The size is based on the final use of the art. I have painted as large as 40" x 60". My book covers average approximately 22" x 36".
Q: What kind of approvals are needed to create this type of art?
A: When creating art for licensed products and book covers, several approvals are needed. First, my sketch must be approved by the licensee. Any necessary changes are made, then the sketch is submitted to the studio. Once approved, I may then proceed to a color rough or go straight to the finished art. The painting is then photographed and re-submitted for approvals by the licensee, the studio and if applicable, the actors themselves.
Q:Do you use live models for your paintings?
A: The majority of my paintings are based on TV or movie characters. Therefore, I must rely on photos provided by the studios or movie and video stills. When I paint the ships, I may use photos along with models of the ships to obtain the best angles and lighting. In some cases, when I am able to develop the look of a characters, I have been able to use live models. Working with models allows me to be very creative with the lighting and poses.
Q: Is it difficult being the only female artist creating licensed Star Trek and Star Wars art?
A: Historically, science fiction illustration has been a male dominated field. It can therefore be more difficult for a woman to first break into the field, and then succeed. It is a challenge. I benefit, as I am forced to constantly strive to improve my technique and abilities as an illustrator.
